Gunnar Berge har hatt en rekke viktige verv i en drøy 20-års periode. I 1990-1992 var han parlamentarisk leder for Arbeiderpartiet. Han var medlem av partiets sentralstyre fra 1981 til 1995 og nestleder fra 1989 til 1992. Han var leder for Finanskomiteen fra 1978 til 1981 og nestleder fra 1981 til 1986. Fra 1989 til 1990 var han nestleder for Energi- og industrikomiteen, og fra 1977 til 1981 varapresident i Lagtinget. Delegert til FNs generalforsamling 1975.

Gunnar Berge has held a number of important offices during a period of more than 20 years.
1990-1992 he was parliamentary leader of the Labour Party. He was member of the Executive Board of the Labour Party from 1981 to 1995 and vice chairman from 1989 to 1994. He was chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance from 1978 to 1981 and deputy chairman from 1981 to 1986. From 1989 to 1990 he was deputy chairman of the Standing Committee on Energy and Industry, and from 1977 to 1981 vice-president of the Lagting (the smaller division of the Storting). Delegated to the United Nation’s General Assembly 1975.

Gunnar Berge is a skilled metal worker. He attended Technical Apprentice College 1957-1958. From 1957 to 1966 he was a sheet metal worker at A/S Rosenberg Mekanisk Verksted. Berge has taken various courses within the Labour movement, and in 1966 he attended the college of the Norwegian Federation of Trade Unions.
